RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS OF CYBERBULLYING
Recognizing the Signs of Cyberbullying
Common Indicators
Changes in Behavior:
- Look for unusual withdrawal from friends and family, as well as a shift towards isolation.
- Increased anxiety, irritability, or signs of depression, especially if these behaviors emerge suddenly, can be tell-tale signs.
- A decrease in self-esteem, refusal to participate in favorite activities, or significant changes in mood can indicate emotional distress from online interactions.
Avoidance of Technology:
- If a child starts avoiding their phone, tablet, or computer, this could be a red flag. Sudden reluctance to use technology, especially social media, may indicate a negative experience online.
- Quickly shutting off devices or appearing distressed when checking messages are additional indicators that they might be trying to avoid online confrontations or harassment.
Physical Symptoms:
- Stress from cyberbullying can manifest physically, with children reporting frequent headaches, stomachaches, or trouble sleeping.
- Changes in eating habits, fatigue, and other stress-related symptoms are common when a child is dealing with emotional turmoil.
